telnet
- Your host may offer you frontpage; they may offer to do all the configuring
themselves. Or they may provide the flimsy excuse that they are worried about hackers.
But if you really want control of your site you need a shell account.
Unlimited Updates
- If your host places a limit on the number of times your site can be updated,
Or worse still does not offer unlimited FTP uploads. RUN.
Support
- Even the experts sometimes makes mistakes. So it's good to have strong technical support.
Ask a few technical questions before you sign up. If you don't get a quick response that
means the support team will not respond quickly when your site has a breakdown.
Recommendations
- Ask your host to point you to a few satisfied customers. Then before contacting them
goto the InterNIC Whois and check who is the
billing and Administrative contact of these sites are.
Some ISPs are known to point to group companies as satisfied customers!
Raw log files
- What ever you do, DON'T trust an ISP that will not provide you with raw log files.
