The attack on Sri Lanka's World Trade Center many years ago went largely unnoticed by the internation public. However when the WTC in New York was so tragically destroyed by international terror groups it's vibrations were felt even here in Sri Lanka.

The global campaign against terrorism caused the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam to rethink it's strategy. For the first time in years the LTTE showed an interest in a peacefull settlement to the conflict. Quite fortunately for Sri Lanka and anti war government of Ranil Wickramasinghe came to power in December of the same year.

Within weeks both the government and the Tigers had declared unilateral ceasefires thus signalling at least a temporary halt to the bloodshed. This was strengthen by the signing of a ceasefire aggreement in February. Since then there haven't been any acts of terrorisms in the country to date.

Peace talks began soon afterward and despite attempts by war mongers to scuttle the peace process the talks have been making steady progress. The ceasefire has meant that large areas of the country which were considered unsafe due to the civil war has become accessible to the general public.

As at October the ceasefire has held for nearly two years, this is in spite of several violations of the agreement by the LTTE and serious attempts by the extremist parties of the south to disrupt the process.
