A speaker at last
April 22, 2004
After three rounds of voting, lots of fist waving and retoric a speaker has at last been elected. The first round resulted in a tie, the second round was cancelled due to a sit in protest on the floor of the parliament (by the same people who are supposed to safeguard democracy).
Final round of voting resulted in WJM Lokubandara being elected by a majority of one vote. WJM, as he is popularly known, is one of the few people in the parliament to have kept his nose fairly clean. The fact that he kept it clean for so long is really worthy of praise since all around him corruption was rampant.
