Mobile Phones

April 16, 2004

Sri Lanka has four telecos that operate mobile networks. One is neglibly small and the other is trying really hard to become small too.

That leaves us with mobitel and dialog. Mobitel itself was insignificant until it was taken over by Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT). SLT used to be sleepy giant that jealously guarded to the door to the information super highway. After privatization they have held the door slightly ajar......

Mobitel recently switched from their old analogue network (no not as old as moses but old enough) for a GSM network. The trouble is their staff are clueless about the new technology. Since SLT is an organization that cannot even send you bills on time I guess this is to be expected.

That leaves us with dialog. Dialog tech and customer staff are only a little better than at mobitel, but at least the organization is lead by one of the brightest sparks in the country. After you talk to the support staff at dialog you sometimes wonder why Dr Hans doesn't fire everyone and does everything himself.
